Papua New Guinea

Project Overview

Papua New Guinea was the very first country that received our kits in 1999. The success of the project in PNG initiated our passion to spread to other needy countries.
The lifetime risk of death in childbirth is 1:7 in rural PNG with a maternal mortality rate of 300:100,000 live births. The need was great and the impact from the first 100 kits showed that at least anecdotally there was a significant reduction in maternal deaths.

We currently work through the following organisations in distributing our kits and the training of birth attendants:

1. Australian Doctors International

2. Medical Society of PNG

3. Oro Community Development Project

4. World Hope

Participating Organisations

Australian Doctors International (www.adi.org.au)

Australian Doctors International are a new partner organisation distributing kits in New Ireland and Western Province. They are currently awaiting receipt of their pilot program and hope to soon be distributing kits on a regular basis.

Medical Society of PNG (www.mspng.org)

The BKFA has worked with Professor Sapuri since 2004, initially through Marie Stopes International and now through Medical Society of PNG. The kits are distributed to Kikori and Pimaga District, Morobe and West New Britain provinces. 28,000 kits were supplied up to 2011. Another 16,000 kits are to be distributed in 2012.

Oro Community Development Project (www.oropng.org)

The BKFA has worked with Oro Community Development Project since 2009. To date just over 4,000 kits have been received. It is intended that another 1,000 kits will be provided in 2012.
