Nigeria
Project Overview
There is an obvious need for clean birth kits, with a maternal mortality rate of 800:100,000 live births.
BKFA has been distributing our birthing kits in Nigeria since 2005.
We work with the following organisations;
1. Rotary International Nigeria Fistula Project RINFP
2. Sweet Mother International
Participating Organisations
Rotary International Nigeria Fistula Project (RINFP) (www.rotary.org)
Rotary International Health and Hunger Resource Group approached the BKFA in late 2008 to have Rotary clubs worldwide help fund our birthing kit project, to help target the reduction in maternal and child mortality.
RINFP is in the early stages of support. They request 150,000 kits to complement their women’s health and fistula programmes in 10 rural hospitals. BKFA are awaiting support from Rotary clubs worldwide with funding for this project. Our usual trial of 200 kits has been sent and we are awaiting notification they have arrived before sending more kits. Once up and running the kits will be sent to Kaduna and Kano State.
Sweet Mother International (www.sweetmotherinternational.org)
Sweet Mother International is a relatively new partner organisation. They have successfully received their pilot kits and are now hoping to receive another 10,000 kits in 2012. SMI have three locations in Nigeria, in Kwara State, Kano State and Abuja State, in which they distribute the kits.
